This is a pixlr tutorial but can probably be used in other programs that use layers too. What we are going to do is make the colours more vibrant in a picture.
I'll be using this image
as an example.
.First open your image and create a new layer.
.Use the colorpicker tool (or click I) ,pick a dark colour that still has colour and fill the whole layer with that colour.
.Change the mode to lighten and keep the opacity at 100%
.Create another layer and repeat step 2 but choose a colour that you want to stand out, then set the mode to lighten and opacity to 45%.
.Duplicate the original layer by clicking on the image and then CTRL+J (pixlr) and move it to the top.
.Click on Adjustments » Hue and Saturation and change the saturation to 100.
.Set the mode of that layer to darken and you're done [after you flatten the image ofcourse]!
